GE from Suan Sunandha, took a huge step using SSRU Active MOOC;
novel system to advance learning practically.
Suan Sunandha University acceleratedly develop GE learning system again after a year of a new renovation, brought SSRU Active MOOC; the novel system to use in 2nd semester of 2018 which highlights in practical learning. The director of the bureau demonstrated it helps raising fun atmosphere in classroom and not going to decrease student grade, presented 96% of students passed examinations, also emphasized that it expands student’s visions about the world. Moreover he engaged famous people from various departments to give lectures creating inspirations for students to live a life in the real world.
Dr. Preecha Phongpheng; Director of General Education or GE, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University demonstrated that after GE of Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University hugely renovated the learning system by changing teacher’s responsibility in classroom from being the one giving lecture to be the one who manage the knowledge, emphasized the result of student learning from GE class following a philosophy to create completed human. The learning pattern is according to improve student’s visions about the world, study from real histories both successful and failed, and the most important is to create inspiration and expand their perspectives, not focus on revealing only from books. Supported reasons of the changes is from previous student’s complaints that studying itself is too serious and has no fun and inspiration to learn, then the grade reports after the end of semester is also the cause of student’s grade decreasing. Lots of students received F grade, many of them had to be retired and some of them missed their honor even they had done best performance in their major subjects.
Director of GE also said that after 1 year of the change, the bureau always followed, assessed and summarized both weakness and strength which turned out to be impressive. Most of students (96%) passed examinations, still minor of them need to improve themselves. This showed that GE is not the grade decreased subject as people thought, but we will not stop improving. Association Professor Dr. Reudet Kerdwichai; president reiterated the bureau to continually develop specifically about opportunities for students to learn directly from the real experts, including learning system improvement which has to teach students to understand the world and technology for their best benefits.
Dr. Jaramon Nhukhong; academic vice director of Bureau of General Education said that the bureau emphasized on operating the teaching to be standard, especially about examinations which had been complained by students a lot about its error. We did not let it pass, we analyzed, synthesized and regularly invited experts to discuss about the exam to be standard. The bureau had over 800 completed exams which would create completed graduated according to University’s identities. About the examination system, the tests w were randomly sent differently on subjects for vary difficulty, but details were from the books, teachers and lectures. The reveal were provided both in classroom and e-learning for students to practice before the real test and able to practically use the knowledge to live their life in the society.
Academic vice director of Bureau of General Education continually said that the learning pattern development of the bureau was for the best implementations of students, therefore we improved it to be constantly effective. At this moment, we acceleratedly are improving SSRU Active MODC to be updated and international standard by combining the previous Active Learning system which has been used in GE with Massive Open Online Courseware or MOOC which MOOC of Suan Sunandha has its identities.
“SSRU Active MOOC system is used as a model in 1 subject in 2nd semester 2018. Students also take part in designing which its beneficial are their ability to do assignments. According to MOOC, students have to demonstrate or have to practice in action more, not only watch VDO on MOOC. MOOC has to provide assignments, demonstration and practice, including an ability of call TA. These abilities make this MOOC more alive than other general versions which are the same as previous e-Learning. Easy explanation of differences between SSRU Active MOOC and others MOOC are that ours is a knowledge source and also an assistance to help students revealing their study, assignments and Active Learning which advances student’s skills to be practiced and demonstrated, not only for watching”
Academic vice director of Bureau of General Education also said that we are developing SSRU PLU System or Professional Learning Community (PLC) for teachers which is programed to improve teaching and learning system, and counseling service system to be updated and fast. From a constant development, 96.98% of students attending the classes in the 1st semester of 2017 (32,113 people) passed the exam, only 3.02% of students needed to be improved. The bureau is confident that after a complete improvement of every system, students have the most readiness, not less than any other universities.
